Annette Funicello, then 13 years old, was discovered to be a child by Walt Disney in an amateur performance of Swan Lake performed in Fullerton California. Funicello wasn't asked to be a part of The Mickey Mouse Club cast in its first season and much to her Mickey Mouse Club colleagues' displeasure. However, Disney's impulses proved correct as she swiftly became the most popular actor of The Mickey Mouse Club and included in her own tale Adventures in Dairyland. Funicello realized that she must start recording in order to realise her potential. Annette did not like her voice therefore Disney appointed Tutti Camera to handle her career. Funicello grew to love recordings and collaborated with Camerata who was one of the only forty-something arranging professionals of the time, and who understood the basics of early music. Annette Sings Anka is the album that marked the start of her progress. It was perhaps the first rock-songwriter LP. Funicello was the star of Beach Party, one of five movies about a beach party which were hugely successful. Usually co-starring Frankie Avalon, these films are made by AIP but the scripts for every film were personally accepted and read by Walt Disney to maintain Annette's clear image.
